THE CHALLENGE
Throughout the course of their trips, Carnival cruises guests take multiple types of photos starting from day one, when they embark to family portraits while on ship to fun pictures at each port. The challenge guests had later was being able to find their professionally-taken photos in a room with thousands of analog prints hanging on the walls.

We immersed ourselves on the experience and the user journey. We sailed multiple times to the Caribbean to observe, talk and learn about guest behavior .

We broke down the most important tasks – Search, Favorite and Purchase. Brainstormed about the flows and how to organize the photos in a way to be appeling to the carnival guest.

We created different concepts on how to orginized guest photos ( 20 to 30 per day) that were added to their profile based on face recognition.
We organize them on albums that mimic their photo sessions and follows the cruise itinerary in reverse chronological order. Displaying the latest first.
In case a photo was not displayed by default or the user was looking for someone else we included search functionality where they could search by theme and day.
We turned sketches and wireframes on small prototypes in order to be able to gather user feedback quickly and redefine the design.

We went aboard and recruted participants on day one and set up few sessions in order to test few iterations of an unique feature.

We transformed the cruise line’s existing photo operation by making guests’ photos instantly available on their mobile app as well as the cabins' TVs, and on kiosk and tablets installed in the gallery space.
As result Carnival has a better eco-friendliness and potentially huge cost savings of the new tech solution.
And the revenue from photo on the first sailing after the upgraded experience broke previous single sailing revenue take by 51%.
